چکیده

We analyze the excitation of Ar substrate in contact with Na clusters using a previously developed hierarchical model for the description of the system cnstituted of a highly reactive metal cluster in contact with a rather inert substrate. Particular attention is paid to the dipole excitation of the Ar atoms and the energy stored therein. The Na clusters are considered at different charge states, anions, cations, and neutral clusters for the case of deposition and a highly ionized cluster embedded in a matrix. It is found that the dipole polarization of the Ar atoms stores the largest fraction of energy in the case of charged clusters. Some, although smaller, polarization is also observed for polar clusters, as Na6. The effect is predominantly induced by the electrostatic interaction.

Dynamics of clusters and molecules in contact with an environment

We present recent theoretical investigations on the dynamics of metal clusters in contact with an environment, deposited or embedded. This concerns soft deposition as well as irradiation of the deposited/embedded clusters by intense laser pulses. The description of these complex and demanding compounds employs a hierarchical model in an extension of a QuantumMechanical/Molecular-Mechanical (QM/...

How harmonic is dipole resonance of metal clusters?

We discuss the degree of anharmonicity of dipole plasmon resonances in metal clusters. We employ the time-dependent variational principle and show that the relative shift of the second phonon scales as N−4/3 in energy, N being the number of particles. This scaling property coincides with that for nuclear giant resonances. Contrary to the previous study based on the boson-expansion method, the d...

Dynamics of cluster deposition on Ar surface

Using a combined quantum mechanical/classical method, we study the dynamics of deposition of small Na clusters on Ar(001) surface. We work out basic mechanisms by systematic variation of substrate activity, impact energy, cluster orientations, cluster sizes, and charges. The soft Ar material is found to serve as an extremely efficient shock absorber which provides cluster capture in a broad ran...

Observation of strong optical absorption at the surface of small particles

Experiments are presented in which strong optical absorption at the surface of small metal particles is been observed. This was accomplished by the following method. Na clusters with rough surfaces were prepared on a transparent substrate. They provide the possibility of localized electronic excitations in the surface region in addition to the well-known plasmon-polaritons in the bulk. The part...

Effects of Contact Interactions in Molecular Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the ground state and low-lying excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dipolar molecules interacting via short-range contact and long-range dipole-dipole interactions (ddi). We find the mean field ground state via the variational principle using a separable bosonic wave function as the variational state. This state can be refined to include small excitations in the for...
